Collaborations

Colorado passed the Natural Medicine Health Act allowing for the therapeutic use of psilocybin as a mental health treatment with services expected by mid-2025. The Colorado Division of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) oversees the clinical regulation of this act. This groundbreaking act permits licensed medical providers and mental health professionals to provide psilocybin services for mental health treatments under state law. In order to be eligible to become a licensed facilitator in Colorado, the facilitator must graduate from a DORA approved program. IPI was the first approved program in Colorado. Participants who successfully complete the Colorado Natural Medicine requirements will become eligible to apply for licensure as a natural medicine facilitator in Colorado.

Oregon is the first state that passed a Psilocybin Services act with plans to deliver services as early as January, 2023. The Oregon Health Authority oversees the implementation of this progressive act. In order to be eligible to become a licensed facilitator in Oregon, the facilitator must graduate from an approved program. The IPI  Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Training program was one of the first programs approved by the Oregon Health Authority. Students who successfully complete the program and all practicum requirements will become eligible to apply for licensure as a psilocybin services facilitator.

IPI is proud to be collaborating with The American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners. ASKP3 is a non-profit group of professionals dedicated to the safe clinical use of ketamine for mental health disorders and pain conditions. Members of the ASKP3 board act as partner participants in the IPI training and give regular feedback about the ketamine assisted psychotherapy curriculum.

IPI is proud to be collaborating with Usona Institute. Usona Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit medical research organization dedicated to supporting and conducting pre-clinical and clinical research to further the understanding of the therapeutic effects of psilocybin and other consciousness-expanding medicines. Usona researchers act as partner participants in the IPI training and give regular feedback about the psilocybin assisted psychotherapy curriculum.

“The IPI community is so accepting and they really work hard to create a space for us to make connections with each other and also with the leaders.”

Mindy Tockman, MA, Missouri
IPI Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Program Participant

Who should join the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Training?

This training is designed for therapists, physicians, nurses and other allied mental healthcare professionals who want comprehensive training in psychedelic-assisted therapy, in order to utilize ketamine as a psychedelic medicine and ready themselves for the anticipated approvals of MDMA and psilocybin.

This program is definitely for you if:

You’re curious and don’t know where to start and want to be led by the experts through a step-by-step process of building your competence in psychedelic-assisted therapy
You’re a therapist who wants to learn from some of the most experienced teachers of psychedelic therapy and research from MAPS, Johns Hopkins, Usona, and more
You’re concerned about how to safely and effectively provide psychedelic-assisted therapy
You want to learn how to ethically provide counseling and integration with clients who use psychedelics outside of a medical setting
You’re feeling frustrated because your therapy toolbox doesn’t crack the code fast enough for some of your clients
You want to get certified and learn how to legally get involved with psychedelic-assisted therapy
You want to be one of the first therapists to experience a psilocybin-assisted therapy Training Practicum in the U.S.

What Alumni Are Saying About the Program:

The IPI Online Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Program is a year-long course, taught by more than 30 experts in psychedelic-assisted therapy and research. This program will educate practitioners about the protocols of investigational psychedelic-assisted therapy treatments for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and more. It will also dive into the details of what research and practice have uncovered in the realm of psychedelic sciences, therapeutic processes unique to psychedelic therapy, preparation, dosing, integration, clinic models, and how psychedelics work in combination with other types of therapies.

This 256-hour program was designed from the ground up to be taken online, allowing a busy therapist to take it without traveling.

Participants who attend the in-person psilocybin Training Practicum live portion of the training will be eligible to become an IPI Certified Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Practitioner. If you do not choose the psilocybin in-person Training Practicum option you may still earn these documents upon the successful completion of program requirements, but you will not be eligible for the certification IPI offers.

The hard truth about mental illness

The field of therapy has achieved many important advances over the last few decades. But despite these advances we are unfortunately not making a significant dent in the massive mental health crisis on this planet.

2030

Depression is now the leading cause of disability worldwide and is predicted by 2030 to be the leading cause of the global burden of disease by the World Health Organization.

90%

90% of people experience trauma in their lifetime, according to a 2013 study. About 8 million people have PTSD in the U.S. in any given year. For our veterans, the PTSD and suicide rates are much higher. It’s hard to accept the statistic reported by the Veterans Administration that 22 veterans die by suicide each day.

1 in 5

adults experience some form of mental illness each year, and of these patients many have symptoms so severe their illness dramatically reduces their quality of life, limiting what they can and cannot do.

“I was so taken back at how inclusive this program was. As a therapist of color, many trainings and programs include culture as part of the program. This program was different; it did not include culture, it made it the foundation of learning from every aspect. I felt seen, heard, and understood.”

Ektha Aggarwal, LCSW
California

“Recent data suggest that ketamine, given intravenously, might be the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades. First and most important, several studies demonstrate that ketamine reduces depression within six hours, with effects that are equal to or greater than the effects of six weeks of treatment with other antidepressant medications. Second, ketamine’s effects have been noted in people with treatment-resistant depression. This promises a new option for people with some of the most disabling and chronic forms of depression, whether classified as major depressive disorder or bipolar depression. Third, it appears that one of the earliest effects of the drug is a profound reduction in suicidal thoughts.” (October 1, 2014 NIMH Director’s Blog)

Tom Insel MD, former Provost of Harvard University, American neuroscientist and former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) from 2002 until November 2015

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At IPI we take the position that different perspectives and backgrounds are necessary for a vibrant community to thrive. In the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy, there are not enough providers who identify as members of groups who have been oppressed or marginalized. Particularly poignant is the reality that therapists who do not identify as members of the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities struggle with providing care that is both culturally competent and sensitive to the unique challenges of oppression and marginalization. We are committed to a diverse faculty, equity among the learners and education that creates cultural competency.

How Can I Use This Psychedelic Training?

A Message From the Co-founder:

The IPI certification is designed for qualified professionals who already have a significant foundation of relevant training and experience providing mental healthcare. Certification and certificates of completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the program and demonstrating core competencies.

The only psychedelic medicine currently available nationwide to provide in a medical is ketamine. Additionally, Colorado and Oregon have passed acts to allow psilocybin services. In this program you will learn about how to get involved, ethically and safely, with ketamine-assisted therapy. Psilocybin-assisted therapy is currently in phase 3 FDA trials, and [for now] remain on US DEA schedule 1, making it illegal to use outside an approved research setting on a federal level. MDMA-assisted is currently being reviewed by FDA with a decision in August, 2024. As a training institute, we support following the outcomes of validated research, and, upholding the laws in the territory in which you reside.

Josh Goldstein

Josh Goldstein is a member of the very first Oregon-licensed Psilocybin Service Facilitator graduating class ever. Growing up in Bend, Josh found a deep passion and curiosity for the natural world. With dreams of being a brain surgeon one day, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Oregon. Fresh out of undergrad, Josh soon discovered his passion for teaching young people about the natural world and earned his Master’s in Teaching. After 15 years of teaching in middle and high schools, he was offered a position as a principal at a therapeutic boarding school for girls. Though the natural world still holds a place of wonder for him, he has discovered that the inner workings of the human mind and heart are the greatest mystery.

Josh has significant experience working with plant medicine over the last 30 years, from his initial experience as a young college student taking mushrooms in the woods to more recently, where he has found himself leading ceremonies for his spiritual community and individuals looking to do their own personal work. He has a great reverence for the power of this medicine to help people access their own innate healing wisdom. His long-time meditation and mindfulness practice greatly informs his work.

Josh approaches his work from a place of service. He loves inviting people into the mystery of this life and recognizes that plant medicine is one way to support this inquiry.

When not supporting his spiritual or work community, Josh can often be found out on a paddle board with his kids, in a tent by a lake, or playing chess at a coffee shop.

Molly Powers, MA, LMT

Molly is an explorer of mind, body, and soul. In 2009 she received her Master’s degree from The California Institute of Integral Studies from the department of Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness. For two incredible years she traversed the realms of the mind and soul and is still integrating all of the profound teachings and experiences she collected during that time. In 2014 she began her massage therapy training at the Sedona School of Massage in Sedona, Arizona. During this time she initiated her education in learning to dwell within the body and found, and continues to find ways, to bring her wisdom teachings and soul lessons into the body for safekeeping.

Molly has been a massage therapist for nearly 10 years and is finding the process of deepening into her bodywork practice to be profoundly wrapped up in her soul’s journey toward holding space for the healing process of others. She has learned that the most effective way to unwind tension and holding in the body is to sit and wait for release as opposed to constant action and doing. Through her lens, the most profound healing happens when we sit back and allow what wants to be released to release while trusting that the being’s intelligence is guiding the journey towards wholeness.

Anny Ortiz

Anny Ortiz is a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Human Ecology and the Clinical Therapeutic Lead at Usona Institute. Originally from Sonora, México, over the past 20 years she worked in a variety of therapeutic settings including outdoor behavioral health, long-term residential treatment, and most recently, psychedelic-assisted therapy clinics in Mexico that were using ibogaine to aid in the treatment of severe substance use disorders.

At these clinics, she introduced the use of 5-MeO-DMT derived from the Sonoran Desert toad (Incilius alvarius) as a complement to ibogaine. Doing this work was deeply meaningful, but also personally troubling given that it contributed to the exploitation of toad populations in her native Sonora due to the widespread popularity and demand that ensued. Seeing first-hand the therapeutic effects of the 5-MeO-DMT experience motivated her to pursue graduate school to research this therapeutic potential in a more rigorous way, advocate for synthetic 5-MeO-DMT use, and to connect with an interdisciplinary team of experts to explore avenues for toad conservation and protection in its endemic habitat.

Over the past few years she has been conducting a toad population study in Sonora as the first step to a conservation program for the toad species in collaboration with the Indigenous Medicine Conservation Fund and the Latin American, Caribbean and Iberic Studies program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In her current role at Usona, she is responsible for the development, implementation and management of facilitator activities needed to support psychedelic dosing sessions in Usona sponsored clinical trials.

A lifetime ago, Erin received a BA in psychology and a double minor in holistic health & wellness, and nutrition. She is a certified health coach, yoga, breath, and meditation instructor, and a self-proclaimed food nerd. A plant-fueled human, she’s a firm believer in seasonal, organic, real food. This naturally makes her an advocate against cruelty and abuse of any kind to animals, people, and nature. But please don’t worry, she’s not a preachy plant-eater. In fact, she’s very open to curiosity and conversation, and simply believes that we all could use a few more fruits and veggies in our lives, and a lot more kindness and compassion. Because she’s naturally curious about others, and enjoys conversations and helping people, she came to work for Integrative Psychiatry Institute early in 2020. Prior to that, she taught yoga, breathing, and mediation in both clinical and studio settings. Creating agile nervous systems is a passion, and an area outside family and friendships, where she finds purpose. Although after two decades of teaching, she [sort of] retired, now only teaching workshops privately for a select few clients. When not having conversations with people and teaching, you can find her snuggled up with her two amazing Rhodesian Ridgebacks, reading one of the 5 books she’s currently gotten herself into, cooking (sometimes not so successfully), or watching British mysteries. In the winter months, she’s an avid skier, and in the warmer ones, she’s riding her road bike, trying desperately to keep up with her husband who’s a semi-pro-cyclist, and her son, a burgeoning one, who will be entering and racing in U23.
