Assessment and Treatment Planning
Course Description
Providers who are beginning to adopt an integrative approach often ask, “Where do I start?” This course will show you the algorithm of exactly what to do first, second and third from the perspective of an integrative treatment plan.
In this course, we’ll dive into the nuts and bolts of building an effective integrative assessment and treatment plan for mental health. Utilizing the Integrative Psychiatry Institute’s (IPI) unique assessment map, you will learn how to develop effective, data-driven treatment plans to enable patients to achieve more balance, empowerment and wellness in their lives. You’ll discover a collaborative and empowering approach to informed consent for integrative medicine with patients. You’ll also learn how to use the IPI illness map and a checklist of an expanded set of root causes that can drive psychiatric symptoms.
As you create a differential diagnosis based on suspected root causes, you’ll also need to know what the horses and zebras are, so you can know which treatments will have the highest yield at first. That’s what this course is all about, which labs to start with, and how to begin to combine the judicious use of medications with nutraceutical tools for symptom reduction.
Learning Objectives
- Organize collaborative, empowered informed consent with patients
- Develop initial integrative treatment plans for psychiatric symptoms
- Combine judicious medication prescriptions with nutraceutical tools for symptom reduction

Will Van Derveer, MD
Will Van Derveer, MD is Co-Founder of Integrative Psychiatry Institute (IPI). He co-created IPI as an expression of what he stands for. First, that anyone can heal, and second that we medical providers must embrace our own healing journeys in order to fully command our potency as healers. Dr. Van Derveer spent the last 20 years innovating and testing a comprehensive approach to addressing psychiatric challenges which transcends the conventional model he learned in medical school at Vanderbilt University and residency at University of Colorado, while deeply engaging his own healing path.
He founded the Integrative Psychiatric Healing Center in 2001 in Boulder, CO, where he currently practices. Dr. Van Derveer regards unresolved emotional trauma as the most significant root cause of psychiatric symptoms in integrative psychiatry practice, along with gut issues, hormone imbalances, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and other functional medicine challenges. He is trained in Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and other psychotherapy techniques. His current clinical passion is psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, which he mentors interested doctors in providing. An avid meditator, he has been a meditation instructor since 2004.
